If you work in the north east region in the disability sector and spend much of your week apart from any colleagues in the same organisation, you may be interested in joining the Lone Workers Network which will have its second meeting on the 16th February at 2.30pm. The meeting is informal and will take place in the Nurenmore Hotel, Carrickmacross Co Monaghan. Any workers in the region who work on their own are welcome to just turn up. 3 PLEASE SIGN PETITION: seeking an apology from the Irish Government to all thalidomide survivors

The Irish Thalidomide Association is calling on the Government of Ireland to begin an effective dialogue with the Irish Thalidomide Association, in order to ensure that the wrong that occurred by licensing the drug is righted.

4 Volunteer Management Training Modules

The course is being held in February in the Fitzwilliam Business Centre, Laurence St, Drogheda. The course consists of four modules and will be run over four mornings from 9am - 1pm. Dates are: February 15th, 16th, 22nd and 23rd. There is a cost of €50 per individual (one place per organisation) and for optimum benefit participants are required to attend all 4 sessions. We would advise that the person best suited for attending this course would be a Board member/Manager/Co-ordinator within your organisation.

Monday 15th February: Planning for volunteer involvement 9am to 1pm

Aim: To plan for volunteer involvement and to explore procedures around designing volunteer roles

Tuesday 16th February Recruitment, Selection and Induction 9am to 1pm

Aim: To explore the principles and procedures for the fair and effective recruitment, selection and induction of volunteers

Monday 22nd February Support and Supervision 9am to 1pm

Aim: To provide participants with an understanding of the role and importance of support and supervision when managing volunteers

Tuesday 23rd February Designing a policy for Volunteer Involvement 9am to 1pm

Aim: To provide participants with the knowledge to design a volunteer policy

European Refugee Fund (ERF): 2009 Call for Applications

The ERF funds reception and integration activities supporting asylum seekers and refugees. People with disabilities are also targeted I in this funding opportunity. Applications for funding are invited from Community and Voluntary/Non-Government Organisations (including minority ethnic led organisations) at national, regional or local level, Integrated Local Development Companies, Urban Partnerships, Local Authorities and other public sector organisations. The ERF is a co-funding measure. ERF contributions must be matched by funding from other non-EU sources. The deadline for applications is 5pm on Friday 26th February 2010. The EIF funds actions supporting the integration of third country nationals. People with disabilities are also targeted in this funding opportunity. Applications for funding are invited from Community and Voluntary/Non-Government Organisations (including minority ethnic led organisations) at national, regional or local level, Integrated Local Development Companies, Urban Partnerships, Local Authorities and other public sector organisations. The EIF is a co-funding measure. EIF contributions must be matched by funding from other non-EU sources. Pobal has organised four information sessions on the ERF and EIF 2009 Calls for Funding.

The deadline for applications is 5pm on Friday 26th February 2010.

This year Brain Awareness Week will be held between the 8th and 13th March 2010 this year. The theme for this year will be: Services for people with Neurological Conditions: Innovations and Solutions. The Neurological Alliance of Ireland and its member charities are organising a series of public events all around the country during the week. Carers Week: 14th- 20th June: This is an activity packed week celebrating the contribution that family carers make to the lives of those for whom they care and celebrating the role that they play in society. Many disability organisaitons provide services for family members as well as people with disabilities. This is an opportunity to organise an event for the benefit of carers.
